10 Things I Don’t Hate About Having ADHD

We see it often, ADHD gets a lot of bad press and it CAN be a lot.
The impulsivity, the executive dysfunction, the emotional rollercoasters, the forgotten emails, the overflowing tabs, the guilt / shame spiral because you still didn’t reply to that message from 6 months ago...
But today, I’m showing it some appreciation. Because while ADHD brings chaos, it also brings so much magic and connection.
Sometimes I feel the world only sees the mess. But so much of what makes me a great coach, a creative thinker, and a compassionate human actually comes from my ADHD.
So here is: 10 Things I DONT hate about having ADHD
(inside joke. 10 things I hate about you is my all time favourite comfort film)
1. I don’t hate how fast my brain works.
Of course it can be overwhelming. But it also means I connect dots others don’t see. I spot patterns, possibilities, and solutions before the problem is even finished being explained.
2. I don’t hate my hyperfocus.
When it lands on something meaningful, I am unstoppable. I’ve built offers, websites, written content, and powered through creative projects in hours that would take others weeks. Just don’t ask me to stop and eat.
3. I don’t hate that I feel everything so deeply.
Big emotions can be exhausting. But they also mean I care fiercely. I really listen and I truly show up. That emotional intensity makes me an empathetic coach and an attuned parent & friend (even when I’m crying at the WRONG part of the film 😆)
4. I don’t hate that I can’t do boring things easily.
It’s forced me to build a business and lifestyle that aligns with my strengths. I’ve had to find creative systems, flexible structures, and meaningful work because I literally can’t force myself to grind through what doesn’t matter or what feels meaningless to me.
5. I don’t hate my impulsivity.
Sure, I’ve stabbed a banana with a toothpick (don’t ask - or wait for the blog on banana stabbing impulsivity). But I’ve also said yes to brilliant, brave things without overthinking myself into paralysis. Sometimes the impulse is exactly what’s needed.
6. I don’t hate my adaptability.
My brain is used to chaos, which makes me incredibly good at dealing with emergencies. Crisis mode? I’m your person. I can pivot, problem-solve, and stay calm when things go sideways.
7. I don’t hate the way I parent / approach behaviour.
I try not to punish impulsive behaviour because ultimately I understand it. I see the effort behind the action. I praise the regulation, not just the result. My neurodivergence makes me a safe space for other neurodivergent people and I absolutely LOVE that.
8. I don’t hate my creativity.
Whether I’m writing a blog, designing a coaching tool, or dreaming up offers that don’t exist yet my brain is built for original thinking. It’s not linear, but it’s electric. I have SO MANY ideas.
9. I don’t hate that I need to do things differently.
Because I’ve stopped trying to “fit in” and started asking, what actually works for me? And once I did that I was able to change everything, my routines, my work, my relationships, my health.
10. I don’t hate that I LOVE having ADHD.
Because I see what others don’t.
Not just problems, but patterns.
Not just rules, but exceptions.
Not just what is, but what could be.
ADHD isn’t just a diagnosis or a label. If we lean into it and figure out how to work with it, it's an entirely different way of existing.
If you’re newly diagnosed or still figuring out what ADHD means for you, it’s okay to feel conflicted.
There are hard parts. But there are also brilliant parts. And when we stop shaming ourselves for the chaos and start celebrating the clarity, the creativity, and the compassion that ADHD brings.
That’s when we can really start to live authentically.
